Receiving Massage when High

There are potential physical risks to receiving a massage while under the influence of substances, including cannabis or other intoxicants. While holistic massage can be deeply relaxing and beneficial, being high can alter your body’s responses and awareness, which may lead to complications. Here are some key considerations:
Reduced Sensitivity to Pain - When high, your perception of pain may be dulled, making it harder to communicate discomfort or injury during a massage. This could lead to overworking muscles or applying too much pressure, potentially causing strain or damage. I don’t seek to exert excessive pressure (as in a Sport Massage) during my Holistic sessions which are more focussed on relaxation.
Altered Blood Pressure - Some substances can affect blood pressure and circulation. Combined with the physical effects of massage, this could lead to dizziness, light-headedness, or even fainting. You should always take time to ‘resurface’ after any massage but especially when in an intoxicated state.
Dehydration and Overheating - Festivals and heightened states often involve physical exertion, dehydration, or exposure to heat. Massage can increase circulation and body temperature, which might exacerbate these issues if you’re not adequately hydrated or cooled down. Drink plenty of water and make sure you let me know if you’re overheating.
Impaired Judgment - Being high can impair your ability to make clear decisions, such as choosing the right pressure or duration for your massage. This could lead to overstimulation or discomfort during or after the session. My holistic massage should not cause you ANY pain or discomfort. Tell Me
Emotional Sensitivity - Massage can release stored emotions, and being high might amplify this effect. While this can be therapeutic for some, it may feel overwhelming or unsettling for others. You won’t know until you’ve tried it and even then, different times may release a different emotional response.
Communicate Clearly – You should always inform your therapist about your state so they can adjust the session to ensure your safety and comfort.
Know Your Limits - If you feel unwell, dizzy, or overly sensitive, it’s okay to pause or stop the session.
While massage can enhance relaxation and connection, it’s important to approach it mindfully, especially when in an altered state. I will always prioritise your safety and wellbeing.
